The National Route 66 Museum focuses on the people who lived, worked and traveled the “Mother Road” and offers visitors a classic walk through all eight states, highlighted by realistic murals and vignettes depicting the eras of the road and the interesting places that made Route 66 so famous. As you travel along, you can listen to recorded histories and personal accounts of the road from overhead audio kiosks.

For the ultimate Route 66 experience, visit the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Elk City, Oklahoma. The museum offers visitors a personal journey through the history of the nation’s most revered highway. Encounter the iconic ideas, images and myths of the Mother Road. Learn about the dreams and the labor needed to make the road a reality. Experience the Dust Bowl as thousands streamed along the road, away from drought and despair, and towards the “land of promise.” Listen to the sounds of the Big Band era, when the roar of the big trucks and the welcome home cries to returning soldiers dominated the road. 

Take A Drive Down The Mother Road

Located on Route 66 in Elk City, the National Route 66 & Transportation Museum encompasses all eight states through which the Mother Road runs. See numerous artifacts, antique cars and rare historical documents that capture the spirit of Route 66. You won’t be able to miss Myrtle, a giant kachina doll standing nearly two stories high at the museum entrance. While you’re there, take a “drive” along Route 66 in a 1955 pink Cadillac or watch an old film at a theater. The nearby museums that are part of the Elk City Museum Complex include the Old Town Museum, Farm & Ranch Museum and Blacksmith Museum.

Five Museums In One Experience

The Old Town Museum is based in a beautiful two-story Victorian house, where guests will find mementos of early day pioneer life, displays in the Stars & Stripes room, a Native American Gallery and more. Upstairs, the museum is dedicated to cowboy and rodeo memorabilia donated by the Beutler Brothers Rodeo Stock Producers. The Farm & Ranch Museum showcases tools of the trade from early farm life in western Oklahoma like tractors, barb wire collections and windmills. The Blacksmith Museum details how blacksmiths transformed iron and steel into useful objects by heating, hammering, bending and cutting. Displays include weapons, horseshoes and tools.

The Elk City Museum Complex

The Elk City Museum Complex allows you to immerse yourself in Oklahoma pioneer history. The Old Town Museum includes a Victorian-era house with displays and artifacts that give a glimpse into the lives of early settlers in Western Oklahoma. The Farm and Ranch Museum celebrates Oklahoma’s agricultural heritage. While you’re at the complex, make sure to visit the Blacksmith Museum to see how blacksmiths create metal objects. The complex is also home to replicas of a schoolhouse, opera house, doctor’s office, and a chapel.
